Martin Krpan

Martin Krpan splash screenI did this game with the Hikikomori studio for the Slovenian Government as part of an educational portal for children. The main character, Martin Krpan, was taken from a famous Slovenian tale by Fran Levstik about a salt smuggler that is invited to Vienna by the emperor to fight against a generally unpleasant giant Brdavs.
In this modern adaptation, our hero travels through the beaurocratic maze of the Slovenian government, each level representing a different ministry where Krpan has to collect trucker’s permits, while answering trivia about the government and avoiding obstacles. I provided the game logic, engine and worked with Jure from Comland to tie it to the backend, while all levels and characters were designed and animated by Aljoša and Aron from Hikikomori.

I wonder if this game will ever see the light of day, especially since the last elections.

ona-on.com TV ad

ona-on.comI knew some of the guys from VenetiCOM from before, but I had no idea they were running an online dating portal. I’m usually very sceptical towards such communities, but when I visited them, I saw why it worked for them. They were constantly animating their visitors, chatting with them, organizing social events and group activities. I was very inspired by their enthusiasm and positive attitude.

When they got a chance to advertise ona-on.com on TV, they asked me if I would make a 30 second TV ad for them. I aggreed to help them, but since they didn’t have any material, except photographs from the events and we didn’t have time for elaborate animations, I decided, we would do screen-captures of Luka using the portal and use that and the photos as material.

The other problem was the music. The only music they could provide in such a short time was by a band from Trbovlje that played some kind of quasi-deep cheezy 80s rock. At first I thought, “oh, it’s gonna be that kind of a commercial", but then I rethought it and decidet to do the music myself. So I took a few riffs and a vocal from their song, sliced everything up, introduced some beats and remixed everything into something very disco-ish.

At first, they were a bit shocked, but I think they liked it eventually.

Electronic forms for Cliniporator

CliniporatorAfter I started working at Renderspace, I had more time to do other projects, because the schedule was not as hectic as Parsek’s. My web programmer friend Ivan, who I’d worked with closely at Parsek for quite some time, asked me if I’d be interested in creating electronic forms for the Cliniporator database.

The Cliniporator is an electroporation device used for research in effective DNA transfer in gene therapy. When cells are exposed to electrical fields of sufficient intensity, their membranes become more permeable, allowing large molecules such as some drugs or nucleic acids to enter the cell.

The electronic forms that I created enabled visually adding points where the patient’s tumors are located and entering attributes and details about the therapy for each one. The information is then stored in a database and can be retrieved and analyzed statistically or otherwise.

Nordcross

NordcrossI think this was one of the coolest websites we did at Parsek. Nordcross is a production company of Igor Zupe and Sašo Podgoršek who have done a lot of cool stuf for NSK over the years. We tried to get away from the standard website interface and create something more experimental. The result was pretty cool, especially for those times, and it was a big technical achievement, since it was done with the new Flash 5 and featured QuickTime video. Although the two had been used before, the all-flash site with QuickTime seemingly embedded into it was a breakthrough at the time. After some time, when new browsers came out, the “video over flash” didn’t work anymore, so I decided to try to rebuild the site in Flash 6 as an exercise, enabling the viewing of videos again by using the new video feature in Flash. The site was designed by Ozi, the video preview animations were done by Žiga, the desktops were done by both of them, and the background music was provided by 300.000 V.K.
